High Standard At Cage Bird Show

The chatter of more than 700 caged birds of all shapes, colours, and sizes, filled the Riccarton Town Hall at the jubilee show of the Christchurch Society of Cage Birds yesterday. The birds ranged in breed from the well-known, agile budgerigars, through the more delicate canaries to elegant foreign birds such as Java sparrows, small red and gold finches and cock pheasants. One unusual bird on show was the New Colour canary, which eats certain seeds to retain its orange colour. The Oldest bird in the show was a white cockatoo which was born in 1854.

The quality of the birds exhibited was exceptionally high, the secretary of the society (Mr C. A. Breach) said. One pleasing feature of the show was the improvement in the colours of birds exhibited, he said. The show was officially opened last night, and will be open to the public today and tomorrow.

The judges were:—budgerigars, Messrs .W. J. Salmon, L. W. Cattermole, and A. Streeter; Yorkshire canaries, Mr L. H. Freeman; Norwich canaries, Mr F. L. Weddrell; Border canaries, Mr R. James; roller canaries, Mr S. J. Hay; New Colour canaries, Mr J. Don-Miller; British and foreign birds, Mr W. J. Wilson. Results were:—
