93rd Annual Meeting

The Woolston Public Library had had a very successful year with a membership of 289 and a credit balance of £139, said the chairman (Mr J. E. Hopkins) at the library’s ninety-third annual meeting last evening. Cr. H. G. Hay, chairman of the City Council library committee, chaired the meeting, and Cr. H. E. Denton was also present. Representatives of the St. Martins, Linwood, Opawa, Redcliffs, and Beckenham libraries were present. Cr. Hay said the City Council was pleased to help suburban libraries which helped themselves. The council was spending £13,000 on developing suburban libraries. He said it was the responsibility of th? Government to help libraries more than it did, particularly with assistance in buying reference and educational books which would benefit the community. “It is a question of how long the ratepayer—you, the residents—will be willing to foot the bill for extensions to the library service,” said Cr. Hay. Officers elected were:—
