Shooting Accidents
Sir,—How gratifying, after all these years, to find somebody else expressing concern about shooting casualties; and the contribution of your correspondent, “M.C.C.,” is appreciated accordingly. Indubitably, as she says, novices should have to pass a proper practical test before* being let
loose with lethal weapons. She adds, pertinently enough, “How many know what to do with a loaded rifle when they come to a wire fence? Ask them and find out.” Also, perhaps, ask them what is the first thing to do when taking up a gun or rifle. One suspects that not many youngsters nowadays would make the grade if subjected to the sorts of tests her husband, apparently, and those of my own generation as boys in England, had to pass before being allowed out with a gun. Otherwise, one just did not shoot. It was as simple as that.— Yours, etc., M.T. June 18, 1964.
