ROOT CROP HARVESTER

A ROOT crop harvester is shown in operation on the Marshland road property of Mr W. J. Winter, where it was in the process of handling carrots at the rate of five tons an hour after the tops had been removed by a rotor scythe. The carrots were lifted by an apron digger fitted to the front of the

machine, and rotated on eight inset paddles for dispensing debris, before they were conveyed to an inspection runway, from which they were elevated to a chute and into a tractor-drawn hopper travelling alongside the harvester. Imported from Switzerland, this new type of mechanical

harvester can also handle potatoes at the rate of three tons an hour. In this, case the table and seed-size potatoes are bagged at the end of the sorting runway. Towed by a tractor and driven from the power takeoff, this machine is constructed mainly of jin steel.
