SCOTT BASE LEADER

Christchurch Visit

“Most of this stuff is new to me and so I’m just down here familiarising myself with the scientific disciplines that are carried out at Scott Base,” said Mr Adrian Hayter, the new leader at the base, in Christchurch yesterday. Mr Hayter said he was also taking the opportunity of getting acquainted with some of the men who would include perhaps, one or two going to the Antarctica next season.

Asked if he would perhaps write a book about his experiences while in the Antarctic, Mr Hayter said such work could always be a standby. “I think every chap should have some hobby, or standby, for the slack periods. But from what they tell me I’ve gained the impression we’ll be pretty busy all the time down there.” The Antarctic division of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research was due to call for applicants for Antarctic research any time now, he said. Mr Hayter said he would be in Christchurch again in a few months’ time to interview applicants with the superintendent of the division (Mr G. W. Markham).
