N.Z. AID TO VIETNAM

Attitude Of U.N. Association The United Nations Association of New Zealand applauded the Government’s decision that aid for South Vietnam should be for constructive work in a non-com-batant role, said the secretary, organiser (Mr W. E. Ros») in a statement authorised by the standing committee of the Dominion council of the association. There had been some public concern on the issue of | New Zealand forces being committed in South Vietnam, in Laos, or in Thailand for manoeuvres to influence events in Laos, the statement said. I “While respecting the high | motives of those who seek Ito deter aggressive ideologies and are now closely committed in this region, we believe there would be strong resistance throughout New Zealand to any action which might lead to armed conflict between a section of the i Asian people and ourselves,” j the statement continued. “We wish to express the abhorrence of our members towards any suggestion whatever for the employment of nuclear devices in Laos, Vietnam. or elsewhere. “The association is confident that the Government will earnestly advocate a resort to the good offices of the United Nations in any deterioration that might occur. The services of United Nations observers would be valuable now in determining what forces are crossing which frontiers and why.”

Improvement Wanted.—The council of the Automobile Association (Canterbury) will write to the City Council asking it to improve road markings at the intersection of Fendalton road with Harper and Deans avenues.
