Van Was Too High

The driver of a Christchurch department store delivery van attempted to drive it under the railway bridge across Richardson terrace, Opawa, yesterday afternoon. The clearance between the road and the bridge is Bft. The van roof is higher. The van came to an abrupt halt as the roof hit the bridge. The driver, Mr W. R. Aitken, of 10 Paddington avenue, and his assistant, Mr L. Riley, of 5 Blair avenue, were flung forward violently. Mr Riley suffered facial and head abrasions. Mr Aitken suffered a cut lip and had teeth loosened.

They were taken to the Christchurch Hospital by ambulance, and were allowed to go home after treatment. The van, with crumpled roof, was backed out from under the railway bridge.
