VIRUS IN CEREALS

Severe Infection Not Expected

It is unlikely that there will be any severe aphid and virus infection of autumn-sown cereal crops in Canterbury this year, according to the third report issued by the aphid and virus committee yesterday. “Cereal aphid flights have almost ceased in Canterbury and all wheat sowings should be completed as soon as possible,” says the report. “Spraying will probably be necessary in Marlborough and only in April-sown crops in Canterbury. “Further inspection of cereal crops will be made during the winter and specific recommendations on the necessity for spraying autumnsown crops will be made early in August.”
