Rare Eel

An eel, found on the beach at Oanui, Taranaki, by Mr J. Eustace, of Opunake, has been identified by the Dominion Museum as a snipe eel. “Snipe eels live in permanent darkness 500 to 800 fathoms down over the deep trenches and ocean basins,” said a letter from the museum. There were no snipe eels in collections in New Zealand.—(P.A.)
