CRITICISM OF NEHRU

‘Highwayman Of Goa’ (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright) LISBON, May 29. Portuguese newspapers yesterday branded Mr Nehru as “an abominable figure” and said he was “one of the most notorious cases of hypocrisy and falsity of our times.” Bitterly recalling his attack against Goa in December, 1961, the pro-government “Diario Da Manha,” said under the headline “The Highwayman of Goa is Dead”: “Jawaharlal Nehru was the leader of India who treacherously mobilised an army of tens of thousands against the practically defenceless Portuguese India. “He betrayed the political thoughts of non-violence which he had inherited from Gandhi ... he practically became an ally of the enemies of the West. He was one of the most notorious cases of hypocrisy and falsity of our times.”

• The Roman Catholic and Monarchist Lisbon “A Voz” said:

“For reasons which escape our comprehension, but which are explained by the various interests of international politics, the world remained motionless at the aggression of Goa. . .

“We shall not forget the organiser of this criminal aggression Prime Minister Nehru. It matters little whether he is alive or dead. It is not because he is dead that Nehru will cease to be an abominable figure for the Portuguese people.”
