Cabinet Ministers
Sir, —Apropos of your leading article, I am reminded that shortly after the war a Lancashire business man told his office-cleaner that the wages she earned were about the same as those paid to the teacher who was endeavouring to educate her children. To this piece of information she responded with relentless logic, “But she only does brain work.” Don’t we tend to regard our legislators in rather the same spirit as this admirable down-to-earth lady? Let us readily admit that the direction of a nation is a good deal more interesting than clearing a corner of dust, but surely the hand that rocks the dustbin is not necessarily qualified to rule the world. It all depends upon one’s standards of values, I suppose.—Yours etc., CARACTACUS. May 29, 1964.
