Timaru Contract For Meat Loaders Let

{From Our Own Reporter)

TIMARU, May 29. ’

The tender of F. W. Matthews, Ltd., of Christchurch, for £332,678 for the supply and installation of meat-loading equipment at the Port of Timaru was accepted by the Timaru Harbour Board at its monthly meeting today.

Last year the board called tenders throughout the world to serve number one wharf, the main export berth at Timaru. Tenders closed on January 8. Two tenders came from the United Kingdom, one each from Germany, the I : nited States and Australia, one from an Australian and New Zealand combine, and tw’o from New Zealand.

The tenders ranged from £593,734 to £332,678.

The board’s consulting engineer (Mr C. W. Leitch, of the Southland Harbour Board) together with members and the resident engineer (Mr B. W. Charman) gave the tenders a thorough investigation. After the meeting the chairman and officers of the board met representatives of the

waterside workers’ union and overseas shipowners to advise them of the board's decision. There will be four loaders, compared with five at Bluff, but the successful tenderer has a number of improvements built into his design.

Each of the loaders has the capacity for handling 2500 carcases in an hour. The equipment will have the advantage of eliminating weather and shunting delays and reducing hatch delays and will give a

continuous stream of meat into the hatch for stowage. The all-weather mechanical meat-loading plan will be financed from a World Bank loan previously negotiated through Treasury, of £300,000 and the balance by a loan on the local market. The contractor hopes to make an early start. The completion date is 15 months. Acceptance of the tender is subject to final approval of the Overseas Shipowners' Committee, Wel'ington, and the Ministry of Works. The meat-loading equipment could mean a saving to shipowners of 100 days, which would be worth £lOO,OOO.
