Kumai Works Well At Wingatui

"The Press" Special Service

DUNEDIN, May 28. A sound trial by Kumai, and a smart sprint by Mogambo, were features of the gallops at Wingatui yesterday when the final trials for the opening of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s Winter meeting were held under ideal conditions. The trestles were 40 feet out on the course proper and although the track was cutting up slightly it offered good footing. For winter going, the track was in excellent condition.

A candidate for the Birthday Handicap, Kumai, was ridden by his race rider, B. J. Anderton. He drew clear of his stable-mate, Melotone (M. Parr), over the final stages of their five furlong trial and finished two lengths clear in Imin 7 4-ssec, the last three furlongs in 41 2-ssec.

Kumai was off his feed and did not thrive for a few days after his disappointing run in the Waimate Cup last week, but he appears to have made a good recovery and he could make amends tomorrow. Galloping Easily Golden Blossom (M. F. Dowling) and Debater (J. R. Dowling), two of the first to work, were galloping easily over the same ground in Imin 8 4-ssec, the first two furlongs in 26 1- One of the favourites for the Winter Handicap. Golden Blossom has done well since her winning run at Waimate. Seamai (J. R. Dowling) and Lady Galahad (M. F. Dowling) were together in Imin lOsec. the first two furlongs In 27 2- This time was equalled by Toby Twilight (R. J. Skelton) and Silver Kingdom (A. I. Powell). They were assisted over the last half-mile by Southern Belle <P. Silver) -in 56sec. Golden Century <E. J. Didham) and Glenmorven (J. Mulqueen) were not extended to finish on terms in Imin 9sec, the first two furlongs in 26sec. For Sure (R. J. Skelton) appeared to be galloping easily alongside Corduroy (A. I. Powell) and Coat Of Arms (R. Wilder) over six furlongs in Imin 26sec. the last three furlongs in 42 3-ssec. Worked Well Captain Morgan (A. J. Tweedie) worked most attractively over six furlongs in Imin 23 2-ssec, the last half-mile in 55 2-ssec. He was accompanied over the last five furlongs by Etassem CM. F. Dowling). Gracefield's Pride (W. F. Ellis) and Great Howe (R. N. Marsh) worked well over seven furlongs in Imin 38sec, the first half-mile in 56 2-ssec.

Best Sprint Mogambo (R. N. Marsh) and Rondabelle (R. J. Skelton) dashed over the last three furlongs In 38 2-ssec. This was easily the best sprint effort of the morning. Mogambo was disappointing in his last two races after winning at Beaumont, but he could show up in the Winter Handicap, the second leg of the T.A.B. double. Rondabelle is to make a fresh start in the sprint on Monday and if she races to the satisfaction of her trainer, R. Beasley, she will go to Trentham for the Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting. British Pride <M. J. Turnbull) and Sir Anthony (R. N.

Marsh) worked well. These two members of A. Beckett’s team were placed at Waimate on Saturday. The Toff <W. Gye) and Ravelston (J. F. Carvalho) recorded one of the best half-mile gallops of the morning when they finished on terms in 53sec. the first furlong in 13sec. These times were equalled by their stablemates, Blue Haven (M. Parr) and Fort Garry (B. J. Anderton). Carpenter (C. S. Jones) and Highland Fair (E. J. Didham) could have improved on their time of 55 2-ssec. These two members of A. E. Didham's team were winners during the Easter racing. Sir Athol (G. Mee) was not extended In 55 l-ssec. and Radiant Howe (R. A. Low) came home in 54 2-ssec. Bador CD. Adams) gave a good display of jumping over four flights of hurdles. Second in his last three races, he is one of the favourites for the Greenfields Hurdles.
