RESCUE AT SUMNER

Surf-Riders In Trouble Three youths who were surf riding in the sea off Sumner late yesterday afternoon got into difficulties when they lost their boards in the heavy seas and strong rip. They were assisted to shore by a fourth youth, Russell Craw, aged 15, of 35 Wakefield avenue, Sumner. The three youths were Warwick Beere, aged 15, of 75 Nayland street, Russell Skinner, aged 16, of 88 Wiggins street, and David Allard, aged 15, of 12 Head street. The alarm was sounded at 5.20 p.m. and the Sumner life boat was launched but it was not required. Strong Current

The tide was ebbing and there was a strong current running out to sea past the breakwater. There was also a heavy sea running after recent easterly winds. The youths were about 30 yards past the end of the breakwater when they lost control of their boards. Russell Craw said he was on the way in when he saw his companions were in trouble, so he took his board out to them. All three climbed on to his board and he swam behind. Russell Craw said the water was pretty cold, but they try to go surf riding all through the year. They were all wearing rubber suits yesterday.
