Controversial Picture Wins Baird Award

WELLINGTON, May 28. A photograph of the Queen holding her skirt against the wind at Porirua East, near Wellington, has won the 1963 Baird award for general photography. The winning photographer is J. J. Short, of the “Evening Post,” Wellington. Printed in “The Press” on February 13, 1963, the photograph caused a controversy on taste in the correspondence coloumns for some days. The five Baird awards are for news, feature and sports writing and sports and general photography. The prize is £5O in each section. The competition is conducted by the New Zealand Journalists Association. Details of awards are: News Writing.—D. Minhinnick, “New Zealand Herald,” Auckland, award winner.
