S. BRIGHTON WINS DRAMA FESTIVAL
The drama group of the South Brighton Country Women’s Institute won the C.W.I. district drama festival last evening with their performance of a play entitled “The Funeral Dance.” Mrs Daphney Milburn was the producer. Sheffield institute, with “The Queen’s Ring,” pro-
duced by Mrs Juanita Bull, was the other contestant. Both plays were of a high standard, said Mr Alan de Malmanche, who was the adjudicator. Teamwork in both had been excellent. The casting and the setting in “The Funeral Dance” had been very good, as had been Jie costuming in “The Queen’s Ring.” The next round of the contest will be the area drama festival, to be held at Shirley Boys’ High School on June 23, when South Brighton will compete against the Walkari institute (North Canterbury), which will perform “The Oracle Oak.” Mr John Kim will be the adjudicator, as he will be for the three other area festivals in the South Island—to be held at Greymouth, Blenheim, and Kaitangata.
The institute with the play gaining the highest marks in the South Island will compete with that gaining the highest marks in the North Island in Wellington in July, at the time of the Dominion conference.
