LADY FERGUSSON VISITS AGED

Continuing her practical interest in the welfare of the dependant aged and the young, Lady Fergusson visited Wesley Lodge Eventide Home, its hospital wing and the Methodist Children’s Home yesterday afternoon.

Her Excellency had afternoon tea with the residents and some of the staff at the Eventide Home, after meeting patients in the hospital and making a tour of the combined building.

Welcoming Lady Fergusson, the chairman of the North Canterbury Methodist District (the Rev. H. C. Matthews) explained his church’s aim of working hand in hand with sister communions in the field of social service work. Lad}' Fergusson said she was no stranger to the work being done by the Methodist Church, as she had already visited its eventide home at Picton.

Expressing her thanks for the welcome extended to her tn Christchurch, she said it was a thrill to be able to come to the city and stay—not just rush along through it as she had to do on previous visits.

“It is a lovely feeling to see that there is such a home as this with such a fine background and purpose to it,” Lady Fergusson told the residents.

Mrs M. Harrison, a guest at the lodge, presented her Excellency with a hand spray of pink carnations and fresias. Met at the hospital entrance by Mr Matthews and the superintendent of the Methodist Central Mission (the Rev. W. E. Falkingham), Lady Fergusson was escorted through the wards by the matron (Miss I. E. Macadam). At the lodge, the sister in charge (Miss E. Corbett) and other members of the staff were presented. Before leaving, Lady Fergusson signed the visitors’ books at both the hospital and the eventide home.
