NEW ST. HELENS MATRON APPOINTED
Miss Marie Fraser has been appointed matron of St. Helens Hospital, Christchurch, by the North Canterbury Hospital Board. Miss Fraser is at present matron of the Wellington St. Helens Hospital. She will take up her new appointment in about, three months’, time. She succeeds Miss Te N. Hughes, who has been appointed matron-in-chief to the Otago. Hospital Board. Sister P. Ryan has been appointed assistant matron, St. Helens Hospital. She succeeds Sister A. I. Murray, who retired on March 31. Miss
Ryan is obstetric tutor sister at the Christchurch School of Nursing, and will continue to lecture in addition to her new duties until a replacement tutor is appointed. Miss Fraser trained at the Christchurch Hospital and was staff nurse there for a year before going to the Alexandra Hospital, Wellington. From that hospital she transferred
to St. Helens Hospital in Wellington. In 1948, Miss Fraser went to the Gilbert and Ellice Islands as sister-in-charge of the Central Colony Hospital. After four years she returned to New Zealand as matron of the King George V Memorial Health Camp, Gisborne. Soon afterwards she went back to the Wellington St. Helens Hospital as staff sister. She was promoted to assistant matron in 1953. In 1956 she became matron of St. Helens Hospital, Auckland, returning to Wellington as matron in 1962. Miss Fraser is a registered nurse, registered maternity nurse, and registered midwife, and has the Diploma of Nursing and Hospital Administration. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs I. Fraser, of North parade, New Brighton, and was educated at Richmond School and Avonside Girls’ High School.
