NO STORAGE SPACE

Schools Using Boiler Houses Lack of storage space at schools was universal in New Zealand and it was universal practice by schools to use the boiler houses for storage, said Mr A. A. Cook at a meeting of the Mairehau High School board. The board was discussing a circular from the Department of Education which stated that under no circumstances should boiler houses be used as storerooms. Some school authorities regarded the boiler house as extra storage space, and tins of paint, boxes, cartons and even furniture had been found there. In some cases this made it very difficult to reach switch gear and pumping equipment As well as constituting a fire hazard, such usage made them difficult to clean, the circular said.

The principal (Mr A. B. Ryan) said the department was being too harsh in stating that under no circumstances should the boiler house be used as storage space. “Storage room has been cut to the absolute minimum. If the department would provide us with Suitable storage rooms we wouldn’t have to use the boiler room,” he said. The board agreed to write to the department saying it was necessary to use the boiler house as a temporary storeroom.
