More Clubs, Riders In Amat. Cycling

(Bow Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 27. There is a continuing trend for professional cyclists to revert back to amateur ranks. In the New Zealand Amateur Cycling Association’s annual report, just published, a record number of reinstatements are listed.

Six riders changed ranks in 1962, and 12 the following year. But in the year ended April 30 last, 18 cyclists were reinstated. Among the 18 were four former champions, K. Fish, D. Hills, L. Whyman and G. Wharehoua. The report also says that there are now more amateur cyclists racing in New Zealand than ever before.

Total registration is 755, which is 78 more than last year. The Waikato centre made the biggest gain, 23, and Wellington was a close second. There was a slight drop in boys (under 16) registrations, with the total now at 436, but there are now more cycling clubs—7 B—than at any other stage in the association's 30year history.
