SARAFAND AFFAIR

1939 Articles Recalled A British historian’s recent account of the “Surafend affair” was borne out by a number of articles in the “Review” 25 years ago, says the latest issue of the official journal of the New Zealand Returned Services’ Association.

They said that “one thing well established is that the New Zealanders of the New Zealand Mounted Brigade who have returned are in general agreement with the men of the Australian Light Horse that their nominal ally, the Arab, was a much more detested and distrusted person than their enemy the Turk,” the journal says.

One article in 1939 said that after Lord Allenby had called the men of the Anzac Mounted Division “nothing but a lot of cowards and murderers,” the count of “one, two, three, four, five . . was taken up. The Commander-in-Chief, without waiting to acknowledge the divisional commander’s salute, wheeled his mount and galloped off the parade ground, the article said.
