Sir Gilbert Archey Retires

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 28. The retiring director of the Auckland War Memorial Museum (Sir Gilbert Archey) was bidden farewell by more than 400 members of the Auckland Institute and Museum after 40 years as director. Mr John Seabrook, president of the institute and museum, presented Sir Gilbert Archey and Lady Archey with a cheque as a token of their appreciation and gratitude. Mt Seabrook said that from 1914 until 1924, Sir Gilbert Archey was assistant curator at the Canterbury Museum, apart from a period of war service with the New Zealand Field Artillery. He was appointed director of the Auckland Museum in 1924, but did not know of his appointment for some time, since he was carrying out research on a remote island of the Chathams group. For many years Sir Gilbert Archey had been a member of the council of the Royal Society of New Zealand, and was president in 1941 and 1942. He had served on the senate of the University of New Zealand and the University Grants Committee, and had been president of the Royal Commonwealth Society. “In his work he has built an enduring monument of virtue which the tempests of time can never destroy,” said Mr Seabrook.
