Vietnam

Sir, —As it is permissible to criticise Goldwater, then surely we can criticise other Americans without being subversive. If I used the “logic” of some of his supporters I could call Mr Walker a Communist, as they, too, disagree with Gofdwater. It is our reasons, which can be analysed, that matter, not our motives, which must be difficult to assess. When supposed motives are attacked we usually end up talking the gibberish of Mr Hunter and the “Crete veterans,” who suppose that one can only be right by doing anything which Communists don’t, and must be wrong if Communists happen to agree. Is not dropping bombs wrong because we hold our own intrinsic ideals? If New Zealand is to become anti-Com-munist rather than prodemocratic, we ’may find our way of life has no positive justification. We could end up with a government like those who made the same mistake—Hitler, Verwoerd, McCarthy, and Diem.—Yours, JEREMY AGAR. May 27, 1964.
