r (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 27. . A society of retired and ■ widowed home-owners has ' been formed in Auckland to ( press for a remedy to the rates burden on elderly ■ people and widows. I The society was founded by I 52 Aucklanders at two meet- [ ings held at the home of the organiser, Mrs O. F. Rabone, ’ of Remuera. I Mrs Rabone said the • society’s first step would be '■ to press local authorities for ! a lOs-a-week limit on the rate > . for pensioners. , “In many cases,” said Mrs ■ Rabone, “rates are almost as . much as a rent and retired . people have to go to work again to keep their homes.” , Mrs Rabone said she hoped ; the membership of the i society would soon reach 500 ■ because of its popularity among, many elderly people.
