WORKSHOP GEAR
Need Queried By Member The need for a lathe costing £6OO and a sawbench costing £125 for the workshop was questioned by Mr L. G. Amos when the Christchurch-Lyttel-ton Road Tunnel Authority met yesterday. The purchase was recommended by the works committee.
If there was a lathe, it seemed there should be a skilled fitter and turner to operate it, Mr Amos said.
“I don’t want to see any empire-building in the workshops,” he said. “Because of the closeness of Lyttelton we can get the work done there without building up expensive equipment.” Mr Amos’s points had been made at the works committee, but it was satisfied of the need for the equipment, said the chairman (Mr R. A. Witbrock). It had been assured that a fitter and turner would not be required. “Any amount of garages have mechanics who can do a little fitting and turning,” said the chairman of the committee (Mr W. P. Glue). “You are going to save money and time by not having to send things out.” The tunnel was operating 24 hours a day and at nights and week-ends it would be difficult to get work done out-, side, he said. “I have been out-pointed, but I am not happy about it at all,” said Mr Amos, when the authority agreed to purchase the equipment.
