Wool Prices Lift At Napier Sale

(New Zealand Press Association)

NAPIER, May 27

Today’s Napier wool sale was fully in sellers’ favour for second-shear, with the longer stapled sorts showing the largest gain. Fleece wools suitable for combing were from 2J per cent to 5 per cent dearer.

Considering the dry seasonal conditions prevailing, second-shear wools were more robustly grown and healthier than had been expected, with the result that there were fewer very short stapled lots offering, stated the Hawke’s Bay Woolbrokers’ Association report.

A large number of lines, however, were showing light vegetable fault and some

dustiness resulting in them being dull and sometimes heavier in condition although permanent discolouration and water stains were noticeably absent.

Although an odd lot of good style full length fleece and lambs were catalogued, these types were mainly confined to brokers’ bins and were generally of an end of season indiscriminate nature.

The sale opened strongly with bidding brisk and with good widespread competition, particularly on the longer stapled second-shear and the few lots of good fleece catalogued.

The main buying strength came from the Continent and America, with Bradford competition more noticeable than in recent sales.
