Labour Short
Labour was short on the Lyttelton waterfront yesterday morning. At 8 a.m. another 143 men were required to fill existing vacancies. Two overseas vessels, the Persic and Cornwall, which both arrived from Brisbane in ballast to begin loading, were short manned. One vessel, the newly-arrived Van Neck was idle and the Union company’s . inter ■ colonial freighter Waimea anchored in the stream but is expected to berth early this morning.
