SMASH AT HAWERA
Woman Dead; Husband Hurt (N.Z. Pre™ Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, May 27. A woman died of injuries and her husband was taken to hospital with severe shock after their car was struck by the Wellington-New Plymouth rail-car on a level crossing at Hawera this afternoon. The dead woman was: Mrs Ethyl Nellie O'Callaghan, aged 89. She died two hours after admission to Calvary Hospital, Hawera. Her husband, William Arthur O’Callaghan, aged 88, was tonight reported to be in a satisfactory condition. The accident was the second at the Turuturu road crossing in less than two months. The impact tossed the couple’s car 22 feet.
