Man And Daughter Killed In Collision
A man and his young daughter were killed instantly in a collision between their car and a rail-car at the Kainga level crossing last evening. .
The crossing is off the Main North road, near the Waimakariri bridge.
Those killed were:—
Douglas Norman Mclntosh. L aged 39, a bulldozer driver.; of Tram road, Kaiapoi; and; Pamela Marie Mclntosh,; aged 12.
Mr Mclntosh and his daughter were the only persons in the car. They were in the front seat, and were going to Kainga when the accident happened. Pamela Mclntosh was going to a children’s rallv in the Kainga Hall. The car had turned off the main road, and was travelling west to east along the road J over the level crossing. There is a street lamp about a chain from the crossing, which has no warning bells or lights. The road rises slightly to cross the railway lines. Road signs warn of the crossing. The rail-car was returning to Christchurch from Rangiora. It had only a few passengers. The collision occurred at 6.30 p.m.
The car was thrown back and across the road, in the direction the rail-car was travelling. The twisted body of the car was stopped by a fence and posts at rightangles to the south-west side ■of the crossing, and parallel Ito the south side of the road. Thrown From Car
Mr Mclntosh and his daughter were hurled from the car by the impact. Mr Mclntosh's body was found 30ft south along the railway line from
the point of impact, and his daughter was found 15ft from the point of impact. Both suffered multiple in-j i juries. They were found to be dead by Dr. R. Hunt, of Belfast, who was called to ,the scene. The front suspension of the |car was broken off, and one lof the front wheels was found in a ditch. The engine, flattened and torn from the !chassis, was found 20ft away 'The front of the car. from the bonnet to behind the front seat, was twisted and i torn. The police informed Mr I Mclntosh's wife of the accident. There is one other child [in the family. > An inquest will be opened today before the Christchurch Coroner (Mr A. T. Bell). The rail-car was only superficially damaged. It went on to Christchurch after a delay of almost an hour.
