NEW HISTORY OF SUMNER
Request To Local Resident
The Sumner Residents’ Association has asked Mr W. de Thier, a resident of the district for the last 70 years, to write a history of Sumner. The association hopes to have the history published next year.
Mr A. L. B. Ross gave a talk on the history of Sumner at the annual meeting of the association. For this he drew on a history of Sumner written by a former Town Clerk of Sumner (Mr F. J. Menzies) and published in 1941. For the new history Mr de Thier will have much more material to work from. Mr Menzies book was written mainly from council records. In his annual report the president (Mr J. W. McNab) said that some satisfaction had been achieved with the work of the association in the last year. The association now had about 300 members, and it was intended to canvass for more this year. He said that street lighting in Sumner generally was unsatisfactory. The matter would be pursued with the Municipal Electricity Department. Much better lighting was sought. Officers elected were: patron, Mr G. F. Allan; president, Mr McNab; vice-presidents,
Messrs B. Hansen and E. Brooks; secretary, Mr S. Geary; treasurer, Mr R. H. Lovatt; committee, Messrs J. Stewart, B. Smart, A. R. Thwaites, W. Baguley, D. Richardson, and B. Pye.
