TOKELAU ISLANDERS MAKE NEW START
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, May 25. Twelve young Tokelau islanders arrived in Wellington tonight to begin a new life, 1500 miles from their birthplace. Their coming to New Zealand will assist the administration to prevent over-popu-lation in the islands. The islanders are all single —six men aged from 20 to 25, and six girls, all aged 19. Another group of 10 was assisted last year. The Labour Department has arranged for the employment of the islanders in Wellington. The men will work initially at the railway workshops at Woburn. They will be boarded with Tokelauan families already in Wellington. A spokesman for the Department of Island Territories said tonight the population of the three islands in the group, administered by New Zealand since 1925 and included in the territorial boundaries of New Zealand since 1948, was about 2000. The islanders, being New Zealanders, are under no bond and have no restriction placed on them. The Department of Island Territories hopes that as more
Tokelauans settle in New Zealand, others will follow of their own accord.
