WAS PATRONESS OF CHAMBER
Governor-General’s Mother
The appointment many years ago of Lady Alice Fergusson, mother of the Gover-nor-General (Sir Bernard Fergusson), as patroness of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce was not known by many members of the chamber, said the president of the chamber (Mr E.. Fraser) at a dinner for his Excellency. The appointment of a woman as a member of the chamber was unique in its history, Mr Fraser said. Four days after it was made, several women were admitted as members for the first time to the annual dinner of the London Chamber of Commerce.
Mr Fraser said that an autographed photograph of Lady Alice Fergusson was displayed in the secretary’s office at the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce.
