STAFF TO ASSIST
7-5 Vote By Board Christchurch Drainage Board staff will be allowed to man a street corner for the annual appeal for the Cholmondley Memorial Children’s Home. The board, by seven votes to five, agreed to this last evening. Mr G. A. G. Connal, who said he had every sympathy with the appeal, questioned the finance committee’s recommendation that staff volunteers should man a! corner.
“Street appeals start about 8 a.m. and end at 5 p.m.,” he said. “When we are calling out for work to be kept up to the mark it is disrupting to have eight persons called out for an hour or more each.
“I would sooner give them an hour myself,” Mr Connal said.
Mr E. V. Smith, the chairman of the finance committee, said: "This is a carry over from last year. The first request was for the' board to make a donation,: which we were reluctant to; do. The alternative was to allow ■ the staff to collect if they wanted to; and that seemed a reasonable request.”
