BUENOS AIRES, May 26.
The Uruguayan referee, Mr Eduardo Pazos, said in Buenos Aires today he was advised to leave Lima as soon as possible after Sunday’s tragedy in the Peru national stadium.
Mr Pazos arrived in Buenos Aires on his way home to Montevideo. He said the crowd in the Lima stadium did not react against his ruling that a Peruvian goal against Argentina was not valid.
“Only one person entered the field then,” he said. “The crowd was quiet. When I asked policemen to expel the intruder they did so.
“But then another man with a bottle in his hand tried to attack me. He was carted away by the police. “Then bedlam broke loose in the stands. “1 ordered the game ended, because to go on with it would be dangerous. “Protected by policemen, the players, the linesmen and myself went into the dressing rooms.” Mr Pazos said he had signalled a stop to the play before the Peruvian goal attempt. “A Peruvian player made a dangerous movement, and I stopped play before the
ball went into the Argentine goal,” he said. He added that some Peruvian colleagues advised him to leave Lima as soon as possible “in view of the tension.” He went early yesterday to the airport to wait for the first available plane. Mr Pazos is a 38-year-old father of two. He has been refereeing first-class matches for about 12 years, but this was the first time he had refereed abroad.
