Control Of Deer
Sir,—Many stalkers believe in reducing the deer population and maintaining controlled,, quality deer herds—not extermination. Mr Crofts failed to point out that “the cullers” obtained their respectable tallies during sumnier months in areas closed to private shooting, except in the winter period when neither the cullers nor anyone else will operate there. In contrast, the private shooter is directed to parts of the national park where little game exists. Some measure of the effectiveness of private shooting can be gauged by the number of deer skins exported annually, for Government cullers are not permitted to skin their kills And whereas it is most important for a culler to furnish returns of his kills (to be paid) there is only the dubious reward of three cartridges, in an
obsolete calibre, for each deer token, awaiting the enterprising shooter. I have not availed myself of this offer for the last 70 deer.—Yours, etc., SCIPIO. May 25, 1964.
