Students Damage U.S. General’s Hat
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, May 21. Victoria students last night mutilated the hat of General H H Howze, commander-in-chief of United Nations Forces in Korea, and commanding general of the Eighth United States Army in They returned the hat by throwing it into the American
Embassy grounds together with a note containing at least one obscene word.
This afternoon the presi-dent-elect of the Victoria University Students Association, Mr T. T. Robins, made the following statement:
“Following an investigation, it has been established that some association members were responsible for the incident involving General Howze at the New ZealandAmerican Association function yesterday. “The Victoria University Students Association is especially disturbed that the incident, which can only be classed as grossly irresponsible, took place within tha bounds of the students’ union. “The association offers its apologies for the inconvenience caused and the damage, both moral and material, suffered by General Howze. “Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken against these students.
“This incident, following some unfortunate happenings during capping activities, has caused grave concern to the association, and I trust the Wellington public will not choose to brand students in general as being unable to maintain standards of behaviour accepted by the community.”
