DIVERSION OPPOSED
No Agreement On Wanganui (N:Z. Press Association) TAURANGA, May 21. Twelve experts from the Electricity Department and the Ministry of Works met the Taumarunui Borough Council for discussions, on the suggested Wanganui river diversion scheme for hydroelectric supply, but no agreement was reached, says a statement by the borough council.
I‘The experts ignored or glossed over Taumarunui's losses except those that could be assessed on a monetary basis,” claims the statement. The council has decided to advise the Government that it is completely opposed to water being taken from the watershed when the level in the Wanganui river at Taumarunui was likely to fall below 540 cusecs. The council claims farmed land, the council’s hydroelectric plant and its sewerage scheme would be adversely affected by the reduction in the flow of the Wanganui.
