ANDERSON GUILTY
Life Term For Murder (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON,. May 21. Rangi Haumata Anderson, aged 23, a workman, was found guilty by a jury in the Supreme Court at Wellington today on a charge of murdering Janet Ruth Coulson, aged 19, at Wellington on March 27. He was sentenced to life imprisonment. The jury deliberated for three hours 20 minutes. The Chief Justice (Sir Harold Barrowclough), summing up, said many might agree that the case was a double tragedy. Some sympathy might be felt for Anderson in his predicament, but the other tragedy was the death of the young woman and he was sure the jury would put aside considerations of sympathy.
His Honour said there had been no suggestion Anderson was so drunk as not to know what he was doing. It had been conceded he had the intent to beat his wife, which was a crime. The question was whether he intended to go as far as to kill her. On the question of provocation, his Honour said he had ruled there was no evidence of this fit to be put to the jury and the . jury was therefore not concerned with it.
