Maori Foundation’s Work Reviewed

AUCKLAND, May 21. The Maori Education Foundation’s income this year was £68,000, said the chairman, Mr D. GJ Ball, in Auckland to-

night. This- comprised £32,000 interest on capital and £36,000 unclaimed Maori money. So far this year more than 1200 applications for help had been received and 608 awards made at the post-primary level at a cost of £46,500. Fifty students had been interviewed by universities and 43 assisted at a dost of £4483. The foundation was slowly developing the trade and vocational field and 12 were being assisted in such subjects as singing and ballet Mr Ball said to overcome the children’s difficulties he was anxious for the Maori executive committees, to establish special education subcommittees which 57 would advise and assist parents in

the education of their children.

The sub-committees would also follow up children with special abilities and would attempt to bring parents and schools closer together. his was one of the main projects for this year. To assist these sub-commit-tees, a booklet was being prepared to provide discussion material, said Mr Ball. It would 'deal with parent-child relationship and child growth and was being edited by a Maori, Mrs K. Mataira. Mr Ball said a film would be made to be shown in conjunction with the booklet It would be directed by a Maori.

Mr Ball said that many Maoris lacked knowledge of the positions available in the commercial world and the various school courses required. A brochure explaining these points was being prepared for the guidance of parents.
