RACECOURSE FIRE
Thoroughbreds Killed (N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) LOUISVILLE (Kentucky), May 19. Twenty-eight thoroughbred horses were killed yesterday when a fire swept through stables at Miles Park racecourse. Twenty-three of the horses were burned to death and five others had to be destroyed as a result of burns >br broken legs suffered aS they ran terror-stricken from the fire area. The course manager, Mr Horace Wade, said the loss in horses and property would amount to at least 250,000 dollars. Twelve old stables were destroyed- in the blaze, the cause of which was not immediately known. Running Loose More than 300 other horses were freed from the blazing buildings by grooms and course attendants. Some were running loose near the city. Altogether 600 thoroughbreds were stabled at the course which is scheduled to begin a 50-day meeting on Friday.
