ADVERTISING ON METERS

Dunedin Scheme To Begin Soon

“The Press” Special Service DUNEDIN, May 19.

Advertisements should appear on some of Dunedin’s parking meters later this month, said a spokesman for the Invercargill firm which has the contract.

“A few hundred plates should be fixed to meters on the week-end of May 22,” he said. The scheme to allow the meter advertisements was a contentious one when it was put to the Dunedin City Council. The council once reversed its decision, and finally approved the scheme by three votes.

Later some churches in the central area asked for, and were granted, exemption, from advertisements for the meters outside their buildings. The council takes 25 per cent of the gross revenue for the first year and 33 1-3 per cent for the remainder of a five-year contract. The contract should have run from March 1, but the firm ran into several difficulties which prevented the advertisements . appearing. However, jt will still be liable for the minimum payment of £4OO a year from March 1.

The advertisements will be in the fdrm of two small plates fixed back ■to back: The two; bought by one advertiser, will cost 5s a week. There are 950 meters.
