Re-Echo And Dr. Jekyll Likely Marton Double

"The Press" Special Service WELLINGTON, May 19. Re-echo and Dr. Jekyll appeal most for the T.A.B. double at Marton tomorrow. Re-echo stands out in the first leg, the Aidworth Stakes, and Dr. Jekyll looks the improver for the second leg, the Onepuhi Handicap.

Having his first start since December, Re-Echo finished brilliantly for fourth over six furlongs at Waverley. He was less than two lengths from the winner, Waitaha, which beat Brenda Lee by a head. There was not a great deal of class in the field, but Re-Echo’s run would have been a good one in any company. Because he needs less racing than an average stayer to bring him to peak, Re-Echo is going to make it hard for the more seasoned runners at Marton. Re-Echo’s barrier draw at No. 24 is unlikely to make much difference because he usually settles down at the back.

Those in the group expected to offer the most opposition are Early Light, Cantus, Ardlui, Princess Merit, and Three Kings. It will be surprising if the placegetters come from outside these. Second Leg Dr. Jekyll and Sonare are the pick of the Onepuhi Handicap field. Dr. Jekyll has had two starts since February—at Waverley and Otaki—at which he looked as if he was not far away from the form he showed in the spring and summer. In 11 starts at that time Dr. Jekyll had a win (at Bulls) and seven placings. The win was over Funny Story, and twice he was second tb Tara’s Pride and twice second to Donald Dinnie. Sonare won at Foxton. with 8-5 and she has the same weight at Marton, where the minimum is down 71b. At Foxton she had 121 b above the minimum and tomorrow she has 191 b over. If the hard race she had at Foxton four days earlier has not affected her, Sonare will be the one for Dr. Jekyll to beat.

Outside of these two, there is still plenty of form held by Home on the Range, Tangelo, Maria Mitchell, Brenda Lee, and Carester, while King’s Cove has run his best races at Marton.

Conspirator has had only one start over fences and he finished second to Parlez. He should hold a good winning chance in the now-depleted field for the Hammond Hack Hurdles, the first leg of the on-course double. Drawn Wide Most of the form runners for the Turakina Juvenile, the second leg, have drawn wide. One which has not is Misere, second to His Grace at his last start and a brilliant final trialist. The prospects are for a dead track.
