Kumai Fit For Waimate Cup

DUNEDIN, May. 19.

Kumai enhanced his prospects in the Waimate Cup with a most attractive gallop at Wingatui this morning. Other trialists to show up were The Toff, Blue Haven and Lucky Streak, who are also trained by H. A. Anderton.

Most of the gallops were held on the outside of the course proper. The track was cutting out after recent rain. Ridden by his race rider, B. J. Anderton, Kumai was accompanied by Promise (J. F. Carvalho) and Ravelston over a solid mile.

The Toff (Parr) joined in near the six furlongs and finished well a length clear of Kumai, with gaps to Ravelston and Promise. Kumai ran the last seven furlongs in lmin 39sec, and the last three in 43 4-ssec. Now or Never (Mee) shaded Great Howe (Marsh) by a length in lmin 40sec,

the first half-mile in 55 l-ssec. Carpenter (C. Jones) and Glemnorven (E, J. Didham) ran five furlongs in lmin 9 3-ssec, the first two furlongs in 27sec. This time was equalled by Golden Blossom (J. R. Dowling) and Debater (Pledger). These two members of D. P. Wilsons’s team were not out for time.

Kumaito (Allan), a two-year-old brother to' Kumai, which joined in at the three furlongs, shaded Fort Garry (R. J. Skelton), Balken Boy (B. J. Anderton), and Myfilou (Carvalho). The last three came home from the five furlongs in lmin lOsec. Belle El Nil (Pledger) ran five furlongs, the last halfmile in 57sec, and the concluding three furlongs in 43 3-ssec. Best Sprint The best half-mile was recorded by Blue Haven (W. Gye), which safely held her stablemate, Lucky. Streak (Carvalho), by a length and a half in 53 2-ssec, the last three furlongs in 40 l-ssec. Fine Chase (Kennedy) and The Watch (P. J. Denton) worked over a round in solid style, coming home the last half-mile in 56sec.

Silver Kingdom (A. I. Powell) and For Sure (J. R. Dowling) ran the- opening furlong in 13sec and finished on terms in 55sec.

This time was equalled by Azir (Wilder), Flying York (Landrebe) and Ronda (E. J. Didham). Entrance (Didham) and Golden Century (Landrebe) were not extended in running half a mile in 56sec.

Moquette (Didham) and Lucky Gem (Wilder) sprinted from the three furlongs in 40 2-ssec.

Although the going was slightly greasy for jumping, good schools were recorded by Bador (Denton), Sudd El Nil (Cairns), Mighty Smart (Adams), and Etonne (Denoon), and Corduroy (Kennedy).
