ALTAR CROSS FOR ELY CATHEDRAL.—Mr Louis Osman, a leading English goldsmith, with the cross which he made to a design by Graham Sutherland, whose tapestry of Christ in Coventry Cathedral aroused controversy. The cross, of gold, silver, and black enamel, is 3ft high and weighs more than 112lb. So far £5750 has been raised or promised towards its cost. The design is a cross within a cross. In the centre is a gold figure of Christ crucified, enclosed by leaves of a lily. The four points of the outer cross are in enamel, and each is encrusted with three gold fingers symbolising the 12 Apostles.
