AUCKLAND CHIMPS
Tea Parties Too Costly "The Press’’ Special Service AUCKLAND, May 19. There are to be no more chimpanzee tea parties at the Auckland zoo. The City Council parks and library committee has decided to replace them with animal shows employed on a contract basis.
Recommending this course, Mr G. Dean, the administrative director of parks, said young chimpanzees for a new tea party act would cost £1,500. Feeding them would cost £2OO a year and the wages of their keeper and trainer would be about £l2OO a year.
In addition, between £3OOO and £4OOO would have to be spent on new accommodation for the chimpanzees. Mr Dean said hiring animal shows would be a better proposition financially, especially as the importation of more chimpanzees would bring the number at the zoo to 10. There was also a possibility of the present animals breeding. Chimpanzee tea parties at the zoo began in 1956 and a second group took over in 19.59. They were retired in 1962 when they became too difficult to handle safely.
