‘NICE CHAPS’ IN SOCCER

Hard Players Needed

Canterbury soccer had too many “nice chaps"—there was a need for some hard players who would not be knocked off their stride in front of the goalmouth; said Mr R. Carter, the Canterbury Football Association’s coach, at a meeting of the association’s management committee last evening. Mr Carter was commenting on the senior and under-20 representative matches between Canterbury and Otago at Dunedin last Saturday. “They soft-pedalled when the chips were down,” he said.

But Mr Carter was full of praise for the general displays of both Canterbury sides. Both teams should win the return matches in Christchurch if they attained a similar standard of play under better conditions, he said.

It was no discredit to the senior team to be beaten after playing into the teeth of the “shocking” weather in the first half, added Mr Carter.

“You may have seen the like of it—l haven’t,” he said, referring to the weather. Player Cautioned “The way things are going we’ll need another new book this season,” said Mr W. W. Carruthers after it was decided that the name of W. Brown, a New Brighton first division player, should be entered in the caution book. The referee of the New Brighton v. University match (Mr A. J. Sheffield) reported that Brown, had chested an opposing player in the back as he attempted to play the ball. A direct free kick was awarded to University; Brown sought the reason and, when told, criticised the referee’s ability to control the game. Mr Sheffield said he took the player’s name and cautioned him.
