British Yards Secure £8m. N.Z. Ship Order
.Contracts worth more than £8 million for four fast refrigerated cargo ships have been made with British shipbuilders by the New Zealand Shipping Company. The order for three of the ships has been placed with Bartram and Sons, Ltd., of Sunderland, one for delivery late next year and the other two late in 1966. Lithgows, Ltd., Port Glasgow, are to build the fourth ship for delivery late in 1965.
These orders were secured against strong opposition from other British and Continental yards.
Each ship will be powered by an eight’ cylinder R.D. 90 Sulzer engine. There will be
a centralised control platform in the engine room and data logging will be used extensively for scanning and recording selected points throughout the main and refrigerating machinery. The refrigerating machinery will enable cargo to be carried in the refrigerated compratments at a temperature ' of zero degrees Fahrenheit, with lower temperatures in other lockers. The insulated cargo capacity of each ship will be about 475,000 cubic feet and the general cargo capacity, 55,000 cubic feet. In addition there will be liquid cargo tanks holding about 16,000 cubic feet.
