‘Stop Goldwater’ Movement Denied
(N Z P.A-Reuter—Copyright j LOS ANGELES, May 19. Campaigners for Mr Henry Cabot Lodge today formally threw their support behind Governor Nelson Rockefeller in the California Republican presidential primary election, but denied they were starting a “stop Goldwater” movement.
The campaigners, who call themselves the California Draft Lodge for President Committee, acted in the wake of the liberal New York candidate’s upset victory over Mr Lodge in the Oregon primary last Friday. The committee is a volunteer organisation with about 1000 members who could play a major role in Governor Rockefeller’s bid to win the June 2 primary and capture California's 86 delegates to the Republican convention in San Francisco in July. Two Candidates
The California primary will be a head-on clash between Governor Rockefeller and Senator Barry Goldwater, the conservative Republican who claims he has 500 convention votes and the backing of most
party professionals. Write-ins are not permitted in California. In New York, Governor Rockefeller said: “1 am very pleased to have the support of the leaders. 1 think the trend already had set in after the Oregon primary when many of the Lodge people came over.”. Goldwater Forecast
Senator Goldwater, campaigning in Los Angeles, said: “1 forecast this about three weeks ago. If I were in the Democratic Party giving the Republicans advice on howto break up the Republican Party, that’s exactly the advice I would give." He added: “It's a ‘stop Goldwater' movement, that’s all it is . . Lodge is now dead as far as the convention is concerned.”
