Verdict In Hagley Park Ease
Sir, —Those who believe that the. jury returned the wrong verdict, are entitled to their' opinion. Nevertheless, their belief that this particular jury was mistaken does not justify their criticism of juries in general; nor does it warrant their demand for changes in the jury system. Value judgments are not sufficient justification for changes, in a system which has Stood the test of time, and which is the keystone of civil liberty. It would be more to the point to criticise the social conditions that encourage' the type of behaviour responsible for the Hagley Park case.—Yours, etc., H.J.E. ' May 19, 1964.
Sir,—The-jury were present and heard the evidence (presumably). 1 wonder, were any of your correspondents similarly circumstanced?—Yours, etc., CRIPPEN. May 19, 1964. [This correspondence may now cease.—Ed., “The Press.”)
