BOY VERY ILL
Sensitivity To Drug Suspected
Sensitivity to a new drug is believed to have resulted in two patients being very ill in the Princess Margaret Hospital. One of them, a boy of 14, was there yesterday, bleeding from the nose, and lips. The first patient, a middleaged woman, recovered after treatment in the hospital a few months ago.
“The platelets of the blood apparently disappear entirely, or almost so, resulting in an inability of the blood to coagulate,” explained the medical superintendent (Dr. R. C. S. Dick) yesterday. “We gave the boy a transfusion of fresh blood on Sunday evening, and he seemed better on Monday, but today he is bleeding again and we may have to give more blood. “Although we are fairly Sure that drug: sensitivity was the cause of this condition, we are not prepared to name the drug yet as we have no absolute proof.” The Governor-General (Sir Bernard Fergusson) spoke with the boy during his visit to the hospital yesterday morning.
